In other musical news, the Kyla Tilley album is well underway, but has taken a bit of a back seat since arriving on The Rock. Happily, the lovely Sahara Jane (aka Sara Nasr) passed through Montreal a couple months back. We played a show together, and then she dropped by my studio, napped on the couch, and laid down backing vocals for three songs. We also took a stroll among some caserollers, but I wouldn’t give her a pot to hit, cause we only had the one evening to get work done. The following week-end, Ed Hudson came by with...

I’m in Newfoundland for the summer. I’m currently working on the music for a multi-media fashion show with Cara Winsor-Hehir and Malin Enstrom. Cara’s providing the fashion, Malin is doing projections onto said fashion, and I am working on the back-ground music. It’s a cycle of five short airy, summery pieces. The keys in order are Bb E A C B which in German musical nomenclature spells out B E A C H. They’re simple numbers, guitar accompanied by flute, and one piece has a vocal accompaniment. It has a very Incredible String Band feel to it. The show is...

The Kyla Tilley album is coming along. I’m recording twelve songs, of which at least ten will make it to the album. It will be a mix of older and more recent material, perhaps even with some songs you’ve never heard before. I’ve got the guitar tracks for 8 songs recorded, and am now jamming out some accompaniment with some co-conspirators.
It will be a fairly stripped down offering. At least three songs will be simply voice and guitar, with another handful with violin, and perhaps a little banjo and cello depending on people’s schedules. There will be touches of...

I went to Heavy Mtl this Sunday. I had initially decided to skip it, despite the presence of Opeth, who are one of my favourite bands. Still, I’d seen them 3 times already, and the other bands on the bill were more for interest sake than for real love of the music (ie: Annihilator, Anthrax, Motorhead and uh, Kiss) also, paying $85 to stand in the sun all day is not my idea of a good time. However, when they announced that the mighty Morbid Angel would be putting in an appearance, I was sold.
Now, Morbid Angel is one...

Molt will be playing at Barfly on Thursday July 21. We’ll be playing with Reason Prevails, who jam down the hall from us. The sound of their practising was so good that I had to go ask them to play a show with us. It will be their first show if I understand correctly.
We will be playing our full album set, and the show will be free. Check out this awesome poster that Julian made. He searched for artists whose work is in the public domain who were born on July 21st. He...
