Monday Movie Musings -
Masters of the Universe (2026)

They understood the assignment!
Date Watched: 7 June 2026
My birthday is in a couple days, so this year we celebrated by going to see the new Masters of the Universe movie. I heard it was happening, and that Jerod Leto was cast as Skeletor. I knew I would go see it, so I didn’t watch any trailers or read anything else about it. I was concerned of course, because how can anyone compete with Frank Langella’s portrayal of Skeletor in the 1987 film, but I needn’t have worried. The film makers clearly understood the brilliance of that performance, as well as the silliness of the source material. Everything about this was fantastic. The writing was very clever. The plot made sense, (there was a plot!) the dialogue was fun, the music was PERFECT. All the actors were fantastic in their roles. There were plenty of nods to things that fans of the cartoon, toys, movie, internet memes would get, but those little Easter eggs were worked into the storytelling, they weren’t just things thrown in for people to say ‘Hey, it’s that thing!’
And did I mention just how completely perfect the music was? Oh, it was so good. I really did feel directly targeted by the filmmakers. The last movie I saw in the theatre that spoke so directly to me was the Barbie Movie, so I guess I am now wholly invested in the Mattel Cinematic Universe.
