Week Two Round Up January 09, 2026

This week’s Live Streams We got off to a really lovely start on the Monday Morning Sing Song. I was having a terrible hair day, and I think my camera was having trouble syncing my sound to the the video. We raided Jory Avrey, (joryaverymusic) who was a delightful folky singer-songwriter.

On Tuesday I had my first recording session of the year. I ran through all 10 songs that I plan to record for my 3rd album which led nicely into Wednesday’s song wrangling stream. I changed the name this year from song writing to song wrangling to reflect the days that I work on the scores or arrangements of songs rather than writing them. I got the score for the Beginning completed and I have a ballpark for the tempo. Next step there is to start recording to settle on the tempo and then send it to my bass player.

We then raided Nick Curtaneo (guitarshreda) who we haven’t seen in a while. He practices classical guitar on stream and I ended up buying sheet music for the piece he was practising.

We sang about New Beginnings on the Weekly Wednesday Warble. It turns out I have a lot of songs about new beginnings. I’m not too surprised by that, it is one of my ongoing themes, but the set had three covers and 7 originals. I was happy with how I played.

For Friday Yakuza we played Yakuza 5, continued learning Midsummer Day Dream by Rik Emmet, and finished off by raiding Madudh, who was playing Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. Like me, Madudh is one of a number fellow music streamers who also streams Yakuza games. It’s a lovely little club!

On the daily TikToks I worked on songs that I’m recording for my upcoming album, and added to my list of covers from viewer requests. Someone asked me to start posting the covers that folks ask for, so that is something I’ll look at doing next week.

Entertainment We’ll go backwards in time to include the first weekend of the year as well as this one. I try to stay out of the studio on the weekends and take care of errands on Saturdays and just relax on Sundays. Being the first of the year, I spent a lot of time rearranging my studio (stay out of the studio Kyla) putting up shelves, setting up new workflows.

We try to have a weekly movie night and this year we are trying to start each month with a documentary about someone who has mastered their craft. This week we watched a documentary about Ronnie O’Sullivan. It was very heartening. Ronnie O’Sullivan is widely considered to be the greatest snooker player of all time AND he is a hot mess. It showed us that you can be a hot mess and still reach the pinnacle of your craft. Very inspiring. Otherwise, we spent the weekend watching the Junior’s. (For those of you outside Canada, or who aren’t hockey fans, that’s the IIHF World Junior Men’s hockey tournament.) It starts on boxing day and runs through the first week of January. It is a big deal in Canada. We watch it every year. I always feel kinda bad for the kids on Team Canada. We as a nation are very cruel to kids who don’t live up to our lofty expectations. Canada didn’t even get to the medal rounds the last two years. This year they made it to the bronze medal game. In all three years it was a loss to team Czechia that crushed Canada’s dreams. Canada came home with a bronze medal this year, and good thing, because if they’d lost that game to Finland, Canada would be 3 years in a row with no medals and the players would have been executed on their return home.

This week-end we’re watching biathlon. We’re big fans here. The Biathlon Union broadcasts all their meets on the Eurosport Youtube channel so we watch them all. Since those games all happen in Europe the events are usually on quite early in the morning, and it is an exciting way to start the day. Makes me want to cross country ski. Continuing to work on some space set-up this weekend as well as ongoing work on a new searchable database for all my songs.
