February and RPM challenge March 03, 2023

It’s Friday and I’ve been hard at work this past month. This year I took part in the RPM Challenge by recording as many songs as I could live on my Twitch show. I streamed 4 hours a day, Monday through Friday throughout the month and managed to record 11 songs, which is material for 3 EPs that I plan to put out throughout the year. To have something to submit in order to be able to mark myself as successfully completing the challenge I put together a little teaser: A Taste of Things to Come, which I’ve released for free on Bandcamp. It has three songs, one from each future EP, but I chose 3 songs that I thought work well together so this little release also stands on it’s own. The three songs released were:

Taken by the Wind (which will appear later with ‘It’s Just Always Been There’, ‘Majesty of Trees’, and perhaps ‘Inordinate Fondness’, though I haven’t recorded that one yet.) I’m rather taken by the notion that the dinosaurs didn’t die out but evolved into birds. There is something quite wonderful about the continuity of life on earth, and that like us, dinosaurs, and later birds, get up in the morning, go to work so they can come home and feed the kids, go to bed and get up in the morning to do it all over again.

Paint the Sound (which will appear sooner than later with ‘In the Grand Scheme of Things’, ‘The Beginning’, ‘Snow Shovelling with my True Love on Valentine’s Day’, and one more undecided, unrecorded, (maybe even unwritten?) number) This one came from the prompt: Paint the sound of your intentions. My mother is a visual artist and I peppered her for painting terms to use throughout the verses. This is about how you can know a person so well you can get navigate ups and downs in a relationship, and yet we can never truly know another person.

Red Twist (which will appear somewhere later than sooner, but sooner than later along with ‘Packing the Car’ and ‘Untitled Song About Driving’) A short number about arriving at a motel after a long drive. I wrote this with ‘Untitled Song About Driving’ in mind. I’m thinking a summer road trip release for the full EP, but you can get a taste of how that will sound here. I had fun playing with a synth patch on the guitar for this one.

I also recorded ‘The Universe According to David’ which I thought I’d release as a single, but now I’m not so sure. I think I may save it for whatever EP ends up following Whimseys and Vagarys. (ie: the next collection of somewhat not so serious songs) It’s always so hard to decide.

You can listen to (and download) the Taste of Things to Come HERE.
